Ability to Withstand Caustic Cleaning Agents Prompts Adoption over Polyester and Polypropylene Papers
Florence, Ky.; Kelsterbach, Germany, December 7, 2004 - Thermal Shield™ polyphenylene sulfide-based paper from Powell LLC is being adopted for dairy filtration because it withstands highly caustic and hot sterilization solutions. The PPS paper was chosen over polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) papers given its greater chemical and thermal stability, and over aramid papers because it gives comparable performance at a lower cost.
Thermal Shield is a high-density, calendered paper made with a proprietary grade of Fortron® PPS from Ticona, the technical polymers business of the Celanese Group. The paper is an FDA-compliant material that withstands ongoing exposure to a wide range of chemicals at temperatures above 220°C (428°F).
“Thermal Shield is a cutting-edge product that gives extended service in the spiral-wound filters used in dairy filtration,” says Kennie Thompson, National Sales Manager at Powell. “It stands up to repeated exposure to hot water and caustics having a pH of 12.
“In addition to dairy filtration, it also can be used in the soft drink, juice and other sectors requiring liquid filtration where cleaning solutions and high-temperature water are applied in sanitizing equipment. The paper’s high performance in membrane applications can help manufacturers make significant improvements in filter design and performance."
Thermal Shield resists chlorine, solvents, oils, dyes and most acids and bases at elevated temperatures. It has minimal shrinkage and maintains excellent tear strength and other mechanical properties, even after extended heat aging. Its chemical and thermal stability give it distinct advantages over PP, polyester and aramid papers in water and air filtration, wire wraps and other industrial uses.

Fortron® PPS Gives Thermal Shield TL™ Paper Resistance to Extreme Temperatures, Solvents, Oils, and most Acids and Bases
Summit, New Jersey; Kelsterbach, Germany, April 26, 2004 - A high-density, calendered, polyphenylene sulfide (PPS)-based paper introduced by Powell Corporation withstands extended exposure to temperatures above 200°C and has broad chemical resistance for use in water and air filtration, wire wrap applications and other industrial uses. The new paper, Thermal Shield TL™, is based on a proprietary grade of Fortron® PPS from Ticona, the technical polymers business of Celanese AG (NYSE: CZ; FSE: CZZ).
Thermal Shield TL™ paper resists cleaning solvents, oils and most acids and bases and offers distinct advantages over papers made with other polymers. It is not susceptible to hydrolysis, for example, so it can be used without drying in wire wrap applications.Aramid papers, which are affected by hydrolysis, must be thoroughly dried before use. The new Fortron® PPS-based paper also has a significantly greater thermal capability than paper made with polypropylene and polyester.“We developed this novel Fortron® PPS-based paper to give manufacturers a higher-performance alternative to aramid and other papers,” says Todd Kingsbury, President at Powell. “The paper has minimal shrinkage and maintains excellent tear strength and other mechanical properties after extended heat aging.”“Its chemical and thermal stability give it long life in many applications. For instance, it can provide extended use in filtration systems for milk, cheese and other dairy products that are cleaned with acid.”
Thermal Shield TL™ paper is currently available in thicknesses of 2.0 to 10.0-mils in 1-meter-wide rolls. For more information -
